Bizarre Taoist festival where devotees pierce their mouthes

 Locals take part in a festival piercing their faces with spikes in southern Thailand today (04/10).

The annual Vegetarian Festival takes place across the region with Taoist followers joining in.

Followers believe that the extreme piercings show their dedication to the Taoist faith and give them strength during the year ahead.

The biggest event takes place in Phuket but neighbouring provinces like Trang, seen in the video, also hold the extreme celebrations.
