Thailand is now on full alert about the deadly Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF), after the disease has put popular actor Tridsadee Sahawong in critical conditions.

Tridsadee, 37, is now receiving treatment at the Ramathibodi Hospital.

His doctors said Tridsadee responded to treatments but his conditions remained critical.

DHF has so far killed 102 people this year, according to Disease Control Department.

As many of 102,000 people have come down with the disease since January.

The situation is now almost as serious as the severe spread back in 2013.

Back then, DHF infected 154,444 people and caused 136 deaths.

The hot temperature and intermittent rains this year might have facilitated the breeding of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, and spurred the outbreak.

The risk of spread is higher in crowded cities like Bangkok, Chaing Mai in the North and Nakhon Ratchasima in the Northeast.

To prevent the spread of DHF, it is necessary the mosquito larvae be eradicated.

In the wake of Dengue spread, the authorities have offered the spraying services to eradicate larvae breeding grounds in Bangkok.

According to the World Health Organization, there are around 50 million cases of dengue fever around the world every year. About two and a half billion people, two-fifths of the world's population, are at risk. The disease is now spreading, along with the mosquitoes that carry it, into areas like Texas, in the United States -- far from the virus's tropical breeding grounds. Scientists at an independent research foundation in San Antonio, Texas have developed a new line of study they say shows promise in fighting the often deadly disease. VOA's Greg Flakus has the story from San Antonio.

Around 2.5 billion people worldwide are at risk from dengue fever - a virus spread by mosquitos which causes excruciating headaches, muscle and joint pain. It is usually associated with the tropics of South East Asia and Africa, but as recently as 2009, there was a major outbreak in the Australian city of Cairns. At the city's James Cook University, a team led by Professor Scott Ritchie is working on a new strategy for tackling dengue.
