Remains of a pickup truck destroyed by a car bomb at Central Festival shopping mall in Koh Samui.
Ten people were injured late Friday when a car bomb detonated in the car park of a shopping mall on Koh Samui, a provincial governor said.
The blast occurred about 11.30 pm at the Central Festival shopping mall in Surat Thani province.
Governor Chatpong Chatput said the explosion was caused by a car bomb placed inside a pickup.
Local television reports showed damaged cars and injured shoppers.
The governor also suggested that a fire that occurred at the same time in a warehouse might have been started by explosives.
Two bombs were detonated in February at a luxury mall in Bangkok, injuring two people. Commentators said those bombs were meant to destabilise the military government.

Fire destroys cafeteria building of Surat Co-operative
April 11, 2015 7:53 am
A fire destroyed the cafeteria building of Surat Thani Cooperative Friday night.
The blaze occurred after two explosions were heard shortly after the Central Samui Department Store was hit by a car bomb blast at 10:30 pm.
Some 20 fire engines rushed to control the blaze that swept through the building. Cooking gas cylinders also fueled the fire.
Surat Thani Governor Chatpong Chatphum said two explosions were heard before the fire started. The authorities have yet to check whether electricity transformers there exploded or not.
The governor said no one was injured in the blaze.

Mixed reports on the explosion at Samui’s Central Festival Plaza in Chaweng
As day broke the morning after an explosion rocked the parking lot at Samui’s Central Festival Plaza in Chaweng thoughts and reports as to what caused the incident are mixed and with no official statement so far on the exact cause of the explosion, speculation around the island and indeed the world is rife.
car in CentralSome reports suggest that the car that blew up at around 10-30 last night was Honda Jazz that contained a faulty LPG gas system in the trunk that exploded. Others now suggest that the vehicle, that is now barely recognizable as a vehicle at all, was a Mazda pick-up truck that had been stolen from the Yala, a southern border province and had been driven onto the island by militants from the south of the island.
Lt Gen Prawut Thavornsiri, a spokesman for the National Police told the AFP that there had been a car bomb, but there was no confirmation of the type of explosive materials used, he also declined to say whether the incident could be lined to unrest in the south.
While there have been posts on social network groups suggesting there have been fatalities, none have been confirmed and as we reported last night, so far only six with minor injuries have been confirmed.
The blast occurred at around the same time that a fire broke out at the Sahakorn Coop in Surant Thani, fueling speculation that the blast was caused by insurgents from the Muslim majority southern provinces designed to cause chaos on the first day of the five day Songkran holiday as thousands of tourists arrive to celebrate Thai New Year.

Koh Samui blast 'political'
Car bomb in mall's parking lot seen as attempt to challenge govt; no evidence of insurgents operating outside deep South
THE AUTHORITIES are convinced that the bomb blast in Koh Samui on Friday night was politically motivated.
Government Deputy Spokesman Pol Major Sansern Kaewkamnerd said initial reports revealed that the people responsible for the car bomb was the same group that had planted a bomb in Bangkok. "Since officials have strictly checked Bangkok, the perpetrators have moved to other areas. Officials have found links that the bombers in Samui were the same group responsible for the bomb in Bangkok. We are tracking down traces from the scene,'' Sansern said.
Pheu Thai Party politician Worachai Hema said he believed the attack was aimed to discredit the government after it imposed Article 44 to keep peace and order. "This attack has affected tourism and business confidence because Samui is the heart of tourism in the South,'' he said.

'M Redshirt' arrested in connection to Friday attacks
THE NATIONAL Council for Peace and Order yesterday confirmed that Article 44 of the provisional constitution was cited to arrest Narin Umnongbua or "M Redshirt" in connection with the weekend bombing at the Central Festival shopping mall on Samui island.
Colonel Winthai Suvari, spokesman for the NCPO, said yesterday that the suspect is being detained at a classified place for investigation, which should take no longer than seven days.
All details of the interrogation would be accessible when it has been completed - and not before that, he said.
Facebook post on Surat Thani
"The government officials are not working according to their personal judgement. There is clear evidence and information that can be verified with regards to the process," he said.
The suspect had posted on Facebook that "a lot of stuff is being prepared for Surat Thani tonight".
The car bomb attack in Surat Thani did not signify an expansion of the conflict zone resulting from the unrest in the southernmost provinces, he said.
"Most of the bombings beyond the southernmost provinces are done with the intention to create a disturbance," he said.
Some groups of people are looking for occasions to blow up bombs and fire war weapons, he said.
Officials would be tough with legal measures to tackle the problem, he added.

Man må jo tilstå, at den tiltalte, Narin Umnongbua, har været særdeles samarbejdsvillig, ved at tilstå en forbrydelse, der endnu ikke var begået.
Og så endda på sin egen profil på Facebook.
Give us a break, will you?

Evidence at guards' homes linked to Samui car bomb
THREE MALL GUARDS HELD AFTER GIVING CONFLICTING STATEMENTS TO POLICE; NOW IN MILITARY CUSTODY
POLICE found evidence during a search of three homes belonging to security guards working at Central Festival on Koh Samui that they believe is linked to the car-bomb attack on the shopping mall on Friday night.
The three guards were detained yesterday for questioning by a military team appointed by the Fourth Army Region commander after police said they gave conflicting and suspicious statements about the incident.
Investigators brought sniffer dogs to the guards' homes at Koh Samui and found some components they believed were used to assemble the bomb.
They also collected DNA from the three guards and the results, which will determine if the men were involved in the attack, will be known in a few days.
The military team interrogating the guards suspected that the trio might be involved in the crime because of their suspicious testimonies.
A map of the department store and other evidence was also found during the search of their homes.

grundet til at manden er anholdt er at han skrev følgene på hans facebook side
Narin posted on his Facebook account on 10 April that he was planning to stage attacks in Surat Thani province to express his opposition to the junta.
"Tonight, bring it on in Surat," Narin allegedly wrote in the Facebook post, which has been widely shared on social media. "Who's with me? Let's destroy them. #opposethecoup #opposeArticle44."

det gamle fjendskab ulmer stadigvæk imellem politi og hæren
Clash over Samui blast risks probe ANALYSIS: Police chafe at military's haste in declaring political motive.
The investigation into Friday's bomb blast at the Central Festival Samui car park could be jeopardised by remarks made by the government and the military claiming a political motive was behind the explosion, police say.

SAMUI ATTACK
Car bomb 'the work of people who lost power'
THE car bomb in Koh Samui was masterminded by people who have lost power and want to destroy the Songkran atmosphere, along with the country's image and economy, Defence Ministry spokesman Maj General Kongsheep Tantrawanit said yesterday.
Asked to respond to the comment by former People's Democratic Reform Committee chief Suthep Thaugsuban that a person who lives abroad funded the bomb, Kongsheep said he believed that - as he did not think Thais would hurt one another because of different ideologies. "The bomb is about losing interests.''
National police chief Pol General Somyos Pumpanmuang said police analysed the Samui car bomb and believed the motive of the perpetrators was to instigate turmoil. Masterminds hired assailants to carry out the attack. The Samui blast and motivation was similar to the blast in Ramkhamhaeng in Bangkok in 2013.
Six people suspected of being involved in the Samui car bomb are being held at Vibhavadi Rangsit camp, pending interrogation by military officials from Surat Thani.
But police said they had cleared a man in blue shirt - seen on surveillance cameras and suspected of having driven the pickup laden with explosives last Friday morning. The man was identified as Weera Pancharoen, 39, a resident of Samui. He had no link to the bomb, they said.
To restore confidence in business and tourism on Samui, police strictly checked visitors on all ferry piers to Samui and scanned every person and car entering and exiting the island.
Samui Provincial Police commander Pol Maj General Apichart Bunsriroj said sniffer dogs and Explosive Ordnance Disposal officials were on standby to carry out checks at all piers to Samui.

SAMUI ATTACK
Ex-MPs 'involved' in bomb blast
Police deputy chief says politicians supported the attack; Phra Suthep slammed by Pheu Thai for hinting at Thaksin's role
FORMER MPS with significant influence in the South might have been involved in the recent vehicle-bomb blast at Central Festival Samui shopping mall in the southern province of Surat Thani, two senior police chiefs said yesterday.
"We are confident that these politicians supported the bomb attack," deputy national police commissioner General Chakthip Chaijinda said yesterday.
He said it was suspicious that former South-based MPs had visited Surat Thani a week before the car bomb exploded at the shopping mall last Friday night, injuring many people.
"These politicians still have influence in the area," he added.
Chakthip said the bombers also clearly had links with the ongoing unrest in the deep South, given that the vehicle used for the bomb attack was stolen from Yala, one of the southernmost provinces.
He made these remarks following police questioning of more than 20 witnesses over the past five days.
"Of these witnesses, three have now been placed under military protection, police having established that they have kept contact with those involved in the deep South's unrest. So, we believe they may know something about the vehicle bomb at Central Festival Samui," he explained.
Police are now trying to locate a former security guard at the shopping mall who quit his job just before the blast, he added.
